Frequently Asked Questions
Is it scary?
No. At Beyond the Lock, we design challenging games with enjoyable puzzles, not scares. Everyone’s comfort level is different, though. We never include intentional jump scares, but some locks or mechanisms can make sudden noises. If you have specific concerns, feel free to ask.
How hard is it?
That depends on your team. Different people find different puzzle types easier or harder. Don’t worry — your game master will be ready to give a gentle nudge if you need one. Hints are unlimited and never penalized.
Are we truly locked in?
No. You will never be locked in. You can leave the room at any time, usually through the same door you entered. The game timer continues even if everyone exits.
Can kids play?
Kids ages 6 and up are welcome. Children under 12 must have an adult in the room with them (their 14-year-old sibling doesn’t count). Every person entering the room needs a paid ticket. Children under 6 may not enter the game for safety reasons.
I’m not good at trivia or puzzles. Will I still have fun?
Yes! Everything you need to solve every puzzle is found inside the room. No trivia or outside knowledge required. We include a variety of puzzle styles so there’s something for everyone.
Will I be playing with strangers?
No. All games are private. Your reservation is for your group only.
How long will the experience last?
Plan to be at the facility for about an hour and a half. This includes waivers, a rules video, the story introduction, the game itself (up to one hour), and post-game debrief and photos.
How do I get on the leaderboard?
You don’t. We want players to enjoy the story and puzzles rather than rushing the clock. If you prefer competitive, leaderboard-style games, there are several great escape rooms in Southern California that offer them.
What is your refund/cancellation policy?
Refunds are available with 72 hours’ notice.
You may reschedule up to 24 hours in advance.
No refunds or reschedules are available with less than 24 hours’ notice.
When should I arrive?
Please arrive no later than your scheduled start time. Your experience includes check-in, waivers, rules, and photos. Games begin exactly on time. Late arrivals may result in a shortened experience, and refunds cannot be provided for late arrivals.
I have physical limitations. Can I still participate?
Yes. Our games are not highly physical, but someone in your group should be able to stand, reach, and bend. At least one player must be able to read and understand English.
The Bakery is wheelchair accessible for the full experience.
Liberty includes a section that requires stepping up.
We provide at least one chair in every game for players who may need to sit during the experience.
Contact us if you have specific concerns.
Can I take photos or videos?
Yes, as long as everyone in your group agrees.
Tag us — we love seeing your content.
Please avoid full “walk-through” videos that reveal puzzle solutions.
We also take a team photo for you and provide it free of charge.
Do I need to bring anything?
If you use reading glasses, please bring them. Everything else you need will be provided in the game.
Can I bring my phone? Can I look up answers?
We encourage players to immerse themselves without distractions. Lockers are available for your belongings. If you choose to keep your phone, that’s fine — but nothing in the game requires outside information. Everything you need is inside the room. If you receive a call, please step outside; the timer continues while you’re gone.
I’m not sure how many people are coming. What should I do?
All games require a minimum of two players. You may book for the minimum and add extra players when you arrive. We cannot provide refunds for no-shows.
Do I need a reservation?
Yes. Walk-ins are welcome when space is available, but reservations are strongly recommended.
