Frequently Asked Questions
When are you going to open?
As soon as possible! We've been working diligently with the city to obtain the necessary permits to build and open. We're excited to bring the experience to you, but we aren't willing to cut corners and leave you with anything less than the best possible experience we can offer. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for the latest updates. We can't wait to welcome you in!
Is it scary?
No. At Beyond the Lock, we strive to make challenging games and enjoyable puzzles without the scare factor. That being said, it's impossible to determine what is considered scary for each individual. We never intentionally include jump scares, but the locks and mechanisms can sometimes seem loud. We are more than happy to answer specific questions about the game if you have any concerns!
How hard is it?
That depends on your team and their abilities! Different players find different kinds of puzzles difficult. Don't worry! If you get stuck, your game master will be standing by to give you a gentle nudge to get you back on track. Hints are unlimited, and you are never penalized for using hints.
Are we truly locked in?
NO! You will NEVER be locked into a room. You can exit the game at any time, typically through the door you entered. However, your time does not stop, even if everyone exits the game.
Can kids play?
Children ages 6 and up are welcome to play! Kids under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Each person entering the game requires a paid ticket. For safety reasons, children under the age of six may not enter the game.
I’m not good at trivia or puzzles. Will I still have fun?
Good news! Everything you need to solve the puzzles is included inside the game. No special knowledge or random trivia facts needed! We include a variety of puzzle styles and challenges in each game so there should be something that appeals to everyone!
Will I be playing with strangers?
Only if you bring them with you! Every game is private. Your time slot has been reserved specifically for your party. You’ll never be paired with random strangers.
How long will it last?
You should plan to spend one and a half hours at the facility. Before the game you’ll complete waivers, watch a video discussing rules, and hear the story. The game experience is designed to last about an hour, but may be shorter based on your group size and how quickly you complete the puzzles and challenges. After the game you’ll share in a group debrief and take team photos.
How do I get on the leaderboard?
You don’t! We would prefer that you focus on enjoying the game and having fun with your team rather than rushing through and being the fastest done. If you’re looking for that competitive leaderboard style game, there are lots of awesome escape rooms to explore in So. Cal that offer leaderboards.
What is your refund/cancellation policy?
We can offer a refund for cancellations 7 days in advance. Your game can be rescheduled up to 48 hours in advance. No refunds or rescheduling less than 48 hours before your game.
When should I arrive?
Please arrive no later than your booking time. Your experience includes checking in, waiver signing, and post game debrief and team photos. Your game will begin exactly on time. If you are late, your experience may be shortened and you may not have time to complete the game. Refunds will not be offered due to late arrivals.
I have specific physical limitations. Can I still participate?
Our games are not highly physical, but you will need to stand, reach, and bend over. At least one person in your group will need to be able to read and understand English. Please feel free to contact us and we’d be happy to answer any specific questions you may have about individual game experiences.
Can I take photos or videos?
We ask that you do not take videos inside the experience. We will take team photos inside the room at the completion of the game and provide digital copies at no additional cost.
Do I need to bring anything?
If you need reading glasses, please bring them with you. Everything else you need will be provided in the game.
Can I bring my phone in with me? Can I look up the answers?
We encourage you to fully immerse yourself in the game free from distractions. We provide lockers for you to lock up your belongings before the game starts. However, if you prefer to keep your phone or belongings with you, you are able to do so. The puzzles are original and the information you need to solve them can be found inside the game. Google won’t help! We do ask that for the sake of other players, you step outside of the game to take phone calls. Just know that the game does not stop, even if everyone leaves the experience.
I'm not sure how many people are coming. What should I do?
Our games have a two player minimum. You are welcome to book your game for the minimum and add additional players at the time of arrival. We are unable to offer refunds for no-show players.
Do I need a reservation?
Yes! Walk-ins are welcome, but are based on availability. Reservations are strongly recommended.
